Glider Pilot Licence (GPL)

Our club hosts a flying school approved by the Italian Aviation Authority to issue glider pilot licenses, an ICAO aviatory title valid worldwide.

Applicants must undergo a medical examination in an Air Force structure (Milan or Rome), complete with a simple psychological test. No superman qualities are required however, a good general physical shape is sufficient. Sight deficiencies are permitted up to a certain degree, provided correction is 100% satisfactory.

Mimimum age to attend courses is 16, and there is no maximum limit.

The student pilot is allowed to fly in the front seat of a two-seater glider, with the instructor in the back seat.

Courses are held year round, and instructors take care of pupils at different learning stages at the same time.

There is a specified amount of ground school to be attended as well, to provide the student with the necessary theoretical background.

Our instructors are experienced glider pilots with several hundred flying hours experience, some of them are also power plane pilots. All instructional flights are made with aerotow

A student must complete a minimum of 13 hours of flying instruction and 40 flights to apply for the theoretical and practical final examination by a national inspector. Passing this exam will entitle him/her to receive the glider pilot’s license.

A full course is composed by two phases: the first, basic one teaches the fundamentals of flying up to a standard where the student is capable of flying the glider alone. After the first solo flight (which is normally celebrated by an unexpected shower, administrated by other pilots on the spot…) teaching continues both solo and dual until the student is judged ready for the exam by his/her instructor.

The pace of the learning curve is set by the pupil’s skill level, and there are no preset fixed schedules. Therefore, virtually anybody can, sooner or later, become a pilot.

For more information e-mail us or drop in at the airfield, where you can have a look at our acivities for yourself, and maybe have your first flight already!
